DAY FOUR, WE'VE GOT BIRDS!

We love our chickens.

The group emerged for breakfast as soon as the sun (aka heat lamp) came out

Some people have parrots, others have dogs and cats, we've got birds. Eight of them are doing well and growing like weeds.

Look at the wing growth emerging

Over night wing feathers grew another 1/4 to 1/2 an inch.

That orange guy on the feeder is Trouble, look at those wings

Nugget is doing well after having his nugget removed.

Skunk on the left, showing off his stripe

It appears little Blackie has the nugget problem too. We tried a preemptive strike but it appears we're going to need to take him into the garage and use the hot water in the slop sink to soften and remove the poo that is blocking his little vent (ewwwwwww, chicken-speak).

Skunk is stretching out his wing

According to our chicken book these little guys can fly at two weeks of age. They are already making short flights around in their brooder box. They are going to have a lot of fun when we move them into the much larger coop.

HAND SANITIZING

Look at them growing right before your eyes

Since fowl can carry salmonella bacteria we've been washing our hands even more often. Between all the washing and sanitizing my hands are feeling a bit dry.

The little guys make very small poo so fortunately we don't have to clean their cage every day.

Still growing

Overall the birds have been very well behaved and not much trouble.

The chicks only cost $3.99 each at Tractor Supply Co., a low price for all the fun and joy they've brought us.

A Lemmon glamour pose

Lemmon, great little fluffy wings

Blackie is dreading his visit to the garage hospital treatment center

BLACKIE UPDATE

He did visit our makeshift chicken hospital sink in the garage where we have running hot water. Mary very carefully put the little black butt under the water and was able to dissolve and remove the blockage on his little vent. After a kitchen visit to the hair dryer for some equally carefully applied drying Blackie was returned to his little home whereupon he was very very happy.
